Ålesund is a town that is situated on a number of islands located off the coast of Norway, and features on the itineraries of a number of cruise lines that are sailing around the Baltic.
With much of the town having been damaged by fire in 1904, Ålesund was largely rebuilt in a unique style that means it is packed with impressive art nouveau architecture
The art nouveau centre of Jugendstilsenteret is a popular attraction as a result, being home to a range of different exhibitions, and is one of a selection of museums you can visit whilst ashore.
Well worth checking out, and easily accessible from the heart of Ålesund, is Atlanterhavsparken – which is one of the largest saltwater aquariums in Europe.
Built into the coastal landscapes, the aquarium features a number of large tanks that feature the marine life that can found off the Norwegian coast line, with all of the water used being brought in from the sea.
In the largest tank, you can see a number of feeding shows, whilst there are a number of seals and even penguins to be found on site – with a special breeding programme in place for the latter.
Another popular excursion is to take a day trip out along the famous Troll Road to admire the stunning surroundings of the Trolltindene mountain range.
If you don’t want to go that far out of town, you could instead head for the Fjellstua viewpoint, which is close to the centre of Ålesund and provides stunning views of the town below.
As with a number of towns across Norway, food and drink isn’t the cheapest you’ll find although there are plenty of options if you do want to sample some authentic cuisine.
You’ll also have no shortage of options when it comes to picking up souvenirs from the various shops, many of which will sell quirky gifts that have been handmade using natural materials found in the surrounding countryside.
