Baltimore is a popular port for cruises heading out to the Caribbean but is also worth exploring in its own right during a cruise along the East coast of the USA.
The largest city in Maryland, Baltimore is packed with places to see and things to do, including some of the oldest attractions on the National Register of Historic Places.
The city also has an important place in American history, as it was in Baltimore during the War of 1812 that Francis Scott Key wrote the poem that would become the Star-Spangled Banner, having witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry.
Located in the neighbourhood of Locust Point, the fort is one of the more popular attractions in the city, with self-guided tours that provide the chance to explore a number of exhibits.
Other historic neighbourhoods worth exploring are Fell’s Point, which is home to a diverse range of architecture that reflects the varied selection of immigrants who have laid down roots in the area through the years, and Mount Vernon – which where you’ll find the original Washington Monument that was built to honour the first president of the USA.
Elsewhere in the city, the Museum of Art is worth a visit to explore works from all over the world, with the Maryland Science Centre and the National Aquarium amongst other attractions you may want to consider.
Should you have an interest in sport, you might also fancy a trip to the museum dedicated to the life of Babe Ruth; one of the most famous names in American sport and one of the greatest baseball players of all time.
Whilst you’ll have spent plenty of time on water during your cruise, a trip on the Baltimore Water Taxi is also a popular option for visitors to the city, with views across the bustling harbour area and the impressive city skyline.
Around the harbour, you’ll find no shortage of dining and entertainment options and with plenty of places in which to do some shopping whilst ashore, your time in Baltimore is sure to pass in a flash.
