Accessed via the nearby port of Laem Chabang, Bangkok is one of the most visited cities in the world with a huge number of foreign visitors arriving every year to explore the exotic temples and historical palaces that date back through the ages.
Situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok is packed with things to see and do, with the main attraction being the landmark Grand Palace.
The complex of buildings in the heart of the city dates back to the 1780s and was the official residence of the King of Thailand right through until the mid 1920s. Still used for a number of state functions and home to some royal offices, the Grand Palace is partially open to the public and houses a museum as well as the stunningly beautiful Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
Wat Phra Kaew, to give it its true name, is one of the most sacred Buddhist temples anywhere in Thailand but is far from the only one you might visit whilst in Bangkok with the Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Po) and the Temple of the Dawn (Wat Arun) both worthy of further exploration if your time ashore allows.
Aside from the temples, visitors to Bangkok might like to visit one of the many museums, with the National Museum and the Museum of Siam just two to investigate.
A trip to the former home of American Jim Thompson opens up the opportunity to marvel at a wide range of different artifacts from across South East Asia, whilst a visit to the former palace of King Rama V – the Vimanmek Mansion – means you will be able to explore a sprawling building that houses a wide range of royal memorabilia.
There are plenty of place in which you can enjoy some retail therapy, from huge malls like the Siam Paragon to all manner of markets and traditional old shops where you will find yourself haggling for a bargain.
You also can’t visit Bangkok and not sample some of the very best Thai cuisine, be that in a restaurant or from a street vendor whilst taking a stroll around the streets.
