Barbados is a popular option for people travelling around the Caribbean on a cruise holiday, with the capital city Bridgetown being the major port of call for ships sailing around the area.
The port itself sits close to the Bridgetown so you have easy access to the capital where there are plenty of things to see and do.
The Garrison, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one site that might be worth a visit if you want to explore some of the colonial history of the country. It’s also the place where the Union Flag was taken down and replaced by the flag of Barbados to signal independence.
Within the Garrison, you’ll find George Washington House, a historic old building where the future US President stayed with his brother and the Barbados Museum, which can also be found in what was once the military prison.
Other landmarks within Bridgetown include the Parliament Buildings, Nelson’s Statue, the Anglican Cathedral and the Kensington Oval – the venue for the 2007 Cricket World Cup final.
There’s also no shortage of places to try some Caribbean cuisine or to pick up souvenirs in one of the various markets that are to be found across the city. Pottery from the Earthworks studio, which is located in the heart of the island, is particularly popular.
Like many of the Caribbean islands, Barbados is famous for its beaches and you can head for one of the various stretches of inviting white sand if you want to relax, whilst the waters off the coast are also hugely popular with divers.
That’s in no small part down to the fact that various shipwrecks are located around the island that are waiting to be explored, whilst there is also plenty of marine life within the waters.
The fact that Barbados is so compact means you can easily explore during your time ashore, with the Mount Gay plantation and visitors centre offering the chance to sample some of the finest rum in the world, and the Sunbury Plantation providing an opportunity to see what life would have been like in a bygone era.
You can also explore huge cave systems, stroll through botanical gardens or head up onto the cliffs to marvel at stunning views out to sea.
