The Côte d’Azur in the south of France is one of the most visited destinations in the Mediterranean, and one that is famous across the world.
It’s a popular port of call for people on a cruise holiday as well, with the major lines heading for the French resort known for glitz and glamour having long been a city where the famous would head for some summer sun.
To this day, stars of the big screen still head for Cannes every year for the annual film festival but that is far from the only attraction that the resort has to offer.
Within the city, there are a number of different museums that you might fancy visiting, including the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Provence in an old 18th century mansion, whilst you can also marvel at the impressive design of many of the grand villas that are still to found across the city having been built in the 19th century.
You won’t however be able to head inside, with the villas in private hands and not open to the public.
Once you’ve spent some time exploring the winding cobbled lanes of the Old Quarter, you might decide to take a trip out to Île Saint-Honorat or Île Sainte-Marguerite; two small islands that are located off the coast.
The former is home to a monastery where a small group of monks still live to this day, with the historical old buildings open to visitors, whilst the latter is famous for the Fort Royal prison where the ‘Man in the Iron Mask’ was held.
Some of the old prison cells can be viewed to see what it would have been like to be imprisoned on the island, whilst there is a small museum that features items recovered from wrecks that litter the coastline.
Of course, those who want to spend their time ashore simply relaxing on the beach can do just that thanks to the impressive stretch of sand that sits Cannes, which is surrounded by plenty of bars and cafes where you can grab some refreshments.
Many of these bars sit on the Promenade de la Croisette, where you’ll also find plenty of designer stores and some of the big name hotels where the rich and famous like to stay.
