There are plenty of ways in which you can head off the beaten track on a cruise around the islands of the Pacific Ocean and that’s certainly what you can expect should you book a trip that includes a trip to the Cook Islands.
Situated between New Zealand and Hawaii in the middle of the Pacific, the nation is made up of some 15 islands that provide the opportunity to sample a little bit of paradise thanks to stunningly beautiful scenery both around the coast and inland.
Cruise that visit the Cook Islands head for Rarotonga; the largest island and the one that is home to the capital city Avarua.
Offering picture perfect coastline alongside towering mountain peaks and thick jungles, the island is very much the jewel in the crown when it comes to the Cook Islands and somewhere that you’re sure to enjoy your time ashore.
As well as heading for the beaches, where you can either lie back under the sun or take a dip in the clear blue waters off the coast – perhaps booking a snorkelling trip at the same time to allow you to explore some of the many coral reefs.
You might also want to take a dip in one of the various lagoons that litter the island.
You won’t be able to avoid the towering peak of Te Rua Manga that looks down across Rarotonga and is surrounded by thick forest landscapes that you can explore on a hiking excursion.
There is also the opportunity to head out and explore the many small villages across the island, gaining an insight into how the locals live and providing the chance to embrace the culture of the Polynesian people.
Perhaps surprisingly, given the small nature of the island, there are plenty of chances to enjoy some impressive cuisine – with seafood being particularly popular.
You can also do some shopping whilst you are ashore in one of the local markets, with the Punanga Nui Cultural Market on the waterfront in Avarua being one of the ‘must do’ attractions.
Open throughout the week, it’s the place to go if you want to pick up some souvenirs to take back home.
