Corfu is the second largest of Greece’s Ionian Islands and has long been a popular destination for overseas visitors.
Known in some quarters as the Emerald Isle because of the many cypress trees and olive groves that cover a large part of the island, Corfu is also home to stunning beaches that are the perfect place to lie back on golden sands and embrace the sunshine.
In fact, there is more than 200km of coastline available across the island – so there is no shortage of options…
Those who visit Corfu on their cruise around the Mediterranean will dock near to the capital Corfu Town, which is regarded as one of Greece’s most intriguing cities.
Take a stroll through the cobbled streets of the Old Town area and you’ll be able to explore the various bars, shops and cafes that are spread across the city – meaning plenty of opportunity to pick up souvenirs or to sample the island cuisine.
Elsewhere, you might pay a visit to the historic fortress, which was featured in the James Bond film ‘For Your Eyes Only’, or could take a trip across the bay to Paleokastritsa where you can explore the hill top monastery or simply embrace the stunning coastal views.
Also easily accessible from the town is Achilleion, a palace that was built for the Empress of Austria and designed to replicate a building from ancient times. It’s now used as a museum that is a popular attraction for cruise visitors on an excursion ashore.
Another attraction often visited by cruise travellers is Mon Repos Villa, which is the place where the Duke of Edinburgh was born in 1921, whilst you might like to visit some of the places where the Durrell family – as featured in the TV show – lived during the time on the island.
