Cozumel is located off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula near to Playa del Carmen and is a major port of call for ships sailing in the waters of the Western Caribbean.
Once home to little more than a sleepy fishing village, Cozumel has developed into a major destination for tourists and is well visited by all of the major cruise lines – with ships docking on an almost daily basis.
The scenic sights are the major draw for people who choose a cruise that visits Cozumel, with the waters around the coast being regarded as some of the best in the area to go diving.
Crystal clear waters and spectacular reefs await those who fancy trying their hand at scuba diving, whilst you could also enjoy snorkeling and fishing in the waters around the coast.
Various small boast trips are also available on which you might be lucky enough to see dolphins playing at sea.
As is the case on the mainland, the Mayan influence on Cozumel is clear to see, with a number of important sites on the island. The ruins at San Gervasio are particularly impressive, although only part of the site is open to the public to visit.
Elsewhere the adventure park at Chankanaab offers fun for all the family, with a range of water based activities, wildlife shows, a spa where you can relax and a thrilling zip line course.
Playa Mia is also popular for those travelling as a family, with a waterpark, water bicycles and a special floating park amongst the inclusive activities.
The latter is also home to a sea lion show, crocodile exhibition, spa and zip line course – amongst other things – making it one of the top destinations for families and couples alike who want to make the most of their time ashore.
Various museums help to tell the story of the island, whilst you’ll find no shortage of shopping options where you can pick up some duty free bargains.
You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to sample some traditional Mexican cuisine – which further shows why Cozumel is such a fantastic place to visit on your Caribbean cruise.
