It can be nice to sample a little bit of home during a holiday overseas, and that’s certainly something you’ll find if your Mediterranean cruise docks in Gibraltar.
A large number of ships dock in the British overseas territory, which is located on the Southern top of the Iberian Peninsula, and there is plenty to see when you head ashore – despite Gibraltar’s relatively small size.
The major attraction is the Rock of Gibraltar; the giant limestone mound that towers over the town below at a height of nearly 1,400 feet.
Board the cable car that is located close to Main Street and you’ll be able to head right for the summit of the Rock to visit the large nature reserve. It is here where you can expect to meet Gibraltar’s most famous residents; the Barbary macaques that have free reign around the reserve.
There’s every chance that you’ll be able to interact with the animals whilst there, although be aware that any food or drink you may be carrying will be viewed as fair game…
Whilst you are at the summit, you can take in stunning views that allow you to see up towards the Costa del Sol and across to North Africa and Morocco – if the weather conditions allow.
There is also the opportunity to visit the Tunnels of Gibraltar, an expansive underground network created over hundreds of years that were used for a variety of needs – from communication to defence.
Other highlights of a cruise around Gibraltar include the Moorish Castle and the Gibraltar Museum, where you can learn all about the history of the area, whilst you might enjoy taking a stroll through the small Botanic Gardens that date back to the early 1800s.
Spend some time strolling through the streets and you can expect to find plenty of high street names for some duty free shopping, whilst there are plenty of bars and restaurants where you can grab something to eat before returning to your ship.
