The Isle of Pines is part of the archipelago of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean and one of the many small islands that you might find yourself visiting on a cruise around the area.
Nicknamed as ‘l'île la plus proche du paradis’ – or the closest thing to paradise – the island is one of the most stunning destinations you could wish to visit during a cruise holiday and is proof that the old adage that good things come in small packages is still very much true.
As with a number of islands in the area, the Isle of Pines was once used as a penal colony – in this case by the French – and the remains of that penal colony in the village of Ouro are one of the things that you could decide to visit during your time ashore.
Aside from that, the major draw of the island is the scenery, with the beaches at Kuto, Oro, Upi and Kanumera being well worth a visit.
From the beaches, you can enjoy a swim in the turquoise waters that surround the coast or spend some time snorkelling to marvel at the marine life that is to be found enjoying life around the various coral reefs.
Should you get lucky, you might also see some of the loggerhead and green sea turtles that are amongst the varied forms of wildlife that call the Isle of Pines home.
Other sites that might be worth visiting are the small Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church, which dates back to the 1860s, and the Grotto of Queen Hortense, which is one of various caves that are found on the island.
A truly unique destination to explore on a cruise, you’re sure to enjoy sampling a little piece of paradise as you sail around the Pacific.
