Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s largest islands and has become a top class destination for overseas visitors – including those who are arriving by sea as part of their cruise around the Far East.
Located off the Eastern coast, Koh Samui – like many of Thailand’s other islands – is famed for picture postcard white sandy beaches and clear blue waters where you can lie back and embrace the stunning scenery that surrounds you.
That’s particularly true around Chaweng, a four-mile long beach that is located on the east coast of the island and which is surrounded by various restaurants and bars where you can enjoy some traditional Thai cuisine or relax with a drink.
As nice as the beaches may be, they are far from the only attraction on the island and there is plenty to keep you occupied whilst ashore.
Religious sites include Wat Phra Yai, a Buddhist temple that is home to a huge gold-painted Buddha statue and is located on a small island off the coast, and Wat Plai Laem is a modern building which features a statue of Guanyin – the goddess of compassion and mercy.
The elaborate statue, with no fewer than 18 arms, sets the temple apart from others found across the island and is one of Koh Samui’s most instantly recognisable symbols.
Wat Khunaram meanwhile is the place to visit if you want to see the famous Mummy Monk; who died whilst meditating in the early 1970s having previously requested that his body should be put on display after death.
Elsewhere, the impressive waterfalls at Na Muang are within easy reach of Nathon; the place where you’ll head ashore from your ship via tender.
A walking trail through forest landscapes takes you to the falls, where you can take a dip in one of the plunge pools, or simply enjoy the impressive scenic surroundings, which are a world away from the beaches.
As well as marveling at the sight of water cascading down the two falls, you can also cool off by taking a dip in one of the various plunges pools.
Trekking with elephants or diving to explore the marine life off the coast are two more memorable activities that you can enjoy whilst in Koh Samui; a cruise destination that is sure to provide first rate memories.
