One of the largest cities in Canada, Montreal is also one of the most popular with visitors from overseas and that includes people who have arrived by sea on their cruise along the East Coast.
Situated on the banks of the St Lawrence River, Montreal is rich in history and culture and has more than a feel of Europe about it, as is the case with a number of cities to found within the province of Quebec.
On arriving in the city you’ll find yourself right in the heart of Vieux Montreal, the part of the city where the first settlers from Europe based themselves when the arrived in the 1600s.
It’s well worth spending some time walking around the cobbled streets where you can visit famous sites like the Notre Dame Basilica, Bonsecours Market and the Place Jacques-Cartier, where you’ll find various restaurants offering traditional cuisine.
Head for the Old Port area on the edge of the Vieux Montreal and you’ll find plenty more to explore, with the Montreal Science Centre and the Montreal Clock Tower being two popular attractions alongside La Grande Roue de Montreal; the tallest Ferris wheel in Canada.
There are few cities around that can claim to be as multi-cultural as Montreal, and a stroll along St Lawrence Boulevard will allow you to visit Little Italy, Chinatown and the Jewish Quarter in one go.
Also known as The Main, St Lawrence Boulevard is regarded as a National Historic Site of Canada and features all manner of attractions – from museums and galleries to popular shops and famous eateries.
Other attractions include the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the McCord Museum of Canadian History and the Olympic Park, where the 1976 Summer Olympics took place.
Within the park you’ll find the Montreal Tower, which is the tallest inclined tower in the world, as well as the Biodome and the Botanical Gardens.
Depending on how long you have ashore, you might also want to visit the island of Île Notre-Dame, where you can take a walk around the Grand Prix circuit named after the famous F1 racer Gilles Villeneuve or visit the huge Montreal Casino.
