Muscat is the capital city of Oman and the major port for those who are visiting the country as they enjoy a cruise around the waters of the Middle East.

Looking out across the Gulf of Oman, Muscat is one of the best places to visit on a Middle East cruise because of the fact it provides a more authentic experience of what the region is like when compared to the likes of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

You won’t be faced with the huge skyscrapers that reflect the way in which big business has come to dominate other areas of the United Arab Emirates, and will instead have more opportunities to explore history and culture.

One of the most famous buildings within the walls of the city is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which is named after the Sultan of Oman.

The Grand Mosque is one of a number of places of worship that can be found within the city, and can accommodate 20,000 people at any one time. Be aware that non-Muslim visitors may be unable to enter some of the many other mosques that are within the city.

Within Muscat there are a wide range of museums that provide an insight into the history of both the city and wider Oman, including the National Museum of Oman, the Museum of Omani Heritage and the Sultan’s Armed Forces Museum. The latter is to be found within Bayt al Falaj, which is more than 150 miles old and is located just outside the city limits.

If you are heading outside the city, you could visit Old Muscat - which was the original capital of Oman - or take a tour by 4x4 into the surrounding towns and villages to see authentic Omani life.

Should there be a desire to do some shopping whilst ashore, Muscat is home to a number of large malls but a more authentic experience awaits if you visit one of the local souks to barter with traders for a better price on a range of different goods.
