Nassau is the capital city of the Bahamas and sits on the island of New Providence, which is one of more than 700 islands that make up the Caribbean country.
It’s one of the most popular destinations for those who are enjoying a cruise holiday in the region, with plenty of things to see and do from the moment you step ashore in Prince George Dock.
As with many islands across the Caribbean, one of the main attractions of Nassau is the opportunity to hit the beach and relax under the sun. There are various stretches of sand where you can make the most of the weather conditions, and also enjoy various water-based activities.
These can include trips out to try and spot dolphins, snorkeling on some of the surrounding reefs and even the opportunity to board a submarine for the unique experience of being able to explore below the surface of the water to marvel at the varied forms of marine life.
Away from the beach, a visit to Nassau provides plenty of chances to discover more about the history of both the city, and the Bahamas as a whole.
Fort Charlotte, which overlooks the harbour area, dates back to British colonial times and can be visited throughout the year, whilst Fort Fincastle on the top of Bennet’s Hill is also worth a visit.
Built back in the 1700s, the fort is accessed via the Queen’s Staircase, a set of steps hand-carved from limestone by slaves in the 18th century.
Other historical buildings within the city include the Cathedral, the Bahamian Parliament and the library.
Should you be a lover of all things to do with nature, then the Ardastra Gardens & Zoo house a wide range of different species but is best known for flamingoes, with a breeding programme having been in place since the 1950s.
You’ll be able to sample traditional island cuisine at what of the many eateries across Nassau, whilst a trip to the Straw Market on Bay Street will give you the chance to barter for the best deal on a selection of hand-made goods.
Nassau is also linked to nearby Paradise Island by bridge, and here you can see another side of life in the Bahamas, with the island being home to the Atlantis Resort.
Depending on how long you are ashore, day passes are available that allow you to access the on-site water park, swimming pools and private beach – offering fun for all the family.
