Ocho Rios is one of the three resorts on the north coast of Jamaica that are popular with cruise ships that are heading for the island as they sail around the Caribbean.
Once little more than a small fishing village, Ocho Rios is now geared more towards tourism thanks to a number of hotels that line the area around the main beach.
There are also various restaurants and bars where you can grab refreshments or sample some Jamaican cuisine, as well as a selection of retail opportunities – which range from duty free shops to craft markets where you can try and secure a bargain to take back home.
Many people who arrive in Ocho Rios on their cruise holiday won’t spend much of their time in the resort however, and will instead head out into the surrounding area to explore some of the major attractions.
The major draw is Dunn’s Rivers Falls, which is one of the most famous sites to be found anywhere on the island.
Running for a length of some 600 feet and standing around 180 feet high, the terraced falls are popular with those who want to climb from bottom to top on special excursions that head into the forest.
There are various small pools along the falls that are also popular with those who want to take a dip.
The waterfalls are only one of the attractions within the rainforest surroundings, with those who have a sense of adventure being well catered for.
A high-speed zipline running through the canopy of the forest and a bobsled run that winds its way through the trees are just two of the attractions if you head for Mystic Mountain, where there is also a chair lift ride that foes above the forest below and affords stunning views of the surrounding area.
You might also enjoy some white water rafting, kayaking or off-roading adventures are also widely available.
Stick closer to the coast and you can relax on the beach or go snorkeling in clear blue waters, whilst Dolphin Cove offers the chance to swim with both sharks and stingrays – as well as jungle walks where you can get close to other forms of wildlife.
There are plantations where you can tour historic estates and learn more about Jamaican history, and botanical gardens where you can stroll amongst colourful flowers and lush vegetation.
