There are plenty of remote destinations in Australia and Perth, sitting on the coast of Western Australia, is one such place.
The vibrant and colourful city is packed with culture and charm and can be accessed on ease from the nearby port of Fremantle, where a number of the major cruise lines dock whilst sailing around the Australian coast.
One way to make the trip from the port up into Perth is on the Swan River, which will provide an alternative view of the city and the chance to take in some of the famous riverside sights – including the impressive houses along Millionaires Row.
Once you dock in Perth, you’ll be able to spend some time exploring the main tourist attractions, which includes a large number of museums and galleries.
The Western Australian Museum, the State Library and the Scitech Discovery Centre are all worth considering for a visit, as are Kings Park and the Botanical Gardens – which are amongst the largest inner city parks in the world.
As well as taking in views across the Swan River, you can pay a visit to the Kings Park War Memorial and Eternal Flame – which is dedicated to the servicemen and women from Western Australia who have died in conflict.
Perth is also home to a popular zoo that houses more than 1,000 animals as well as the Aquarium of Western Australia, which specialises in marine life that is found in the waters off the coast line.
Depending on how long you have to spend ashore, you could also take the opportunity to explore Fremantle.
Here, there are numerous historical buildings from across the ages with the Round House being arguably the most famous as the oldest public building in Australia. The Town Hall, Fremantle Arts Centre, the well-preserved High Street and the Fremantle Markets are also worth visiting as is Fremantle Prison.
The latter is part of the Australian Convict Sites; a collection of former prisons across the country that have been granted UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
