Nestled on the coast around 100 miles away from Montevideo sits the resort of Punta Del Este, which is one of the top seaside resorts anywhere in South America.
Something of a playground for the rich and famous, having been compared the likes of Monte Carlo and St Tropez, Punta Del Este is still relatively small but the population swells during the summer months as people are drawn in by the favourable weather conditions.
A number of impressive beaches are perfect for relaxing under the sun, with a mixture of golden and white sand on which you can top up your tan of enjoy a selection of water-based activities, whilst you might even spot whales swimming off the coast line.
Visit Brava Beach and you’ll also be able to see the famous Mano de Punta del Este, a sculpture created by the artist Mario Irarrázabal, which depicts five fingers emerging from the sand.
The sculpture is not only it seen to be a symbol of the resort, but also as one of the most recognisable modern landmarks anywhere in Uruguay.
When it comes to dining, you’ll have no shortage of options, with the local seafood being a particular speciality alongside the beef that Uruguay is famous for.
There are also plenty of chances to pick up souvenirs in the many shops, which range from small boutiques to the latest designer stores.
