The Greek island of Rhodes is one of many that it is possible to visit during a cruise around the Mediterranean, and it’s one that is sure to be a highlight of a trip around the region.
Packed with things to see and do, the island has become a popular summer holiday destination and those who visit during a cruise will have the chance to explore everything that the capital city – Rhodes Town – has to offer.
For many, the first place to visit will be the Old Town area, which is widely regarded to be one of the best preserved examples of a medieval town to be found anywhere on earth.
In fact, it’s so impressive that it’s been granted UNESCO World Heritage status.
Head behind the fortified walls of the Old Town and you’ll find various important historical sites that include the Grand Masters Palace and St Francis of Assisi Cathedral, whilst you might also want to pay a visit to the local Archaeology Museum to discover more about the history of the island.
Should you have time to take a trip outside the city limits, the Acropolis of Rhodes, which dates back to at least the third century BC, is well worth checking out and is home to the remains of the Temple of Apollo as well as a partially restored stadium.
Rhodes isn’t all about the history however, and in the newer part of the town you’ll find a wide selection of shops featuring everything from top designer names to locally made souvenirs, as well as plenty of bars and restaurants.
Here, you can enjoy sampling some top class Greek cuisine and, if you head for the area round the popular beach, can also take in impressive views before returning to your ship.
