Riga remains something of a hidden treasure when it comes to the cities of Northern Europe but that isn’t likely to last for long, with more and more cruise lines offering trips to the Latvian capital.
One of the largest cities in the Baltic region, Latvia is packed with things to see and do, with the Old Town area being particularly popular.
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historic centre – known locally as Vecrīga - is home to some of the most impressive buildings in the city including the 13th century cathedral as well as the churches of St Johns and St Peters.
From the latter, you can take in views across Riga and the wider area
The only tower still standing from the old city walls and Riga Castle, which is now home to a number of museums and is the official residence of the Latvia president are amongst the other Old Town attractions.
Other impressive structures include the House of the Blackheads, which was rebuilt in the 1990s after the original building was destroyed by a bomb attack in World War II
Elsewhere in the city, you can marvel at stunning art nouveau architecture as you stroll through the cobbled streets, with Riga being famous for the large number of structures that were built in the style.
You might also want to visit one of the many museums and galleries within the city, which include the National Library, a popular motor museum and a huge open air museum just outside the city that features a range of buildings depicting Latvian life through the ages.
Should you want to take a break from strolling the busy streets, then Riga is home to a number of parks where you can sit and watch the world go by as well as various bars and cafes where you can sample local drinks and cuisine.
There is also countless boutiques and markets for some retail therapy before returning to your ship to head off to the next port.
