Rome is one of the top city destinations anywhere in Europe, and a popular port of call for the many ships cruising around the Mediterranean.
Accessed from nearby Civitavecchia, the Italian capital is packed with things to see and do – particularly for anyone with an interest in history and culture.
Arguably the most famous of the historical buildings within Rome is the Colosseum, where Roman gladiators would have gone into battle in front of thousands of spectators in ancient times.
No matter where you head within Rome, you can expect to see stunning architecture at every turn, with ornate buildings surrounding open squares – such as the Piazza Navona – where you can spend some time watching the hustle and bustle of city life.
Also worth visiting are the impressive Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain; all of which can be found close together in the heart of the city.

Here, you can take a visit to the Sistine Chapel to marvel at the stunning frescoes created by a number of Renaissance painters or join the throngs of people who flock daily to visit St Peter’s Basilica, which is one of the most famous churches to be found anywhere in the world.
