Salalah, situated close to the border with Yemen, is the second largest city in Oman and is the birthplace of the Sultan; Qaboos bin Said.
Salalah is known as the ‘perfume capital’ of the Arab region thanks to the fragrant smells of the frankincense that is grown on trees nearby whilst fruit and vegetables are widely grown in the region thanks to the local climate.
There is even a popular museum all about frankincense to be found within the city, which can be found near to the Al Balid archeological site.
Take a stroll through the streets and you’ll be able to explore the bustling souks and check out some superb examples of Islamic architecture, or you might prefer to check out pretty beaches where you can take in views across the sea.
Various watersports can be enjoyed off the coastline, whilst various cruise lines offer excursions where you can head off in search of some of the local marine life.
There are plenty of chances to try and spot animals on land too, with the Jabal Samhan Reserve in the nearby Dhofar Mountains being one of the few places left where you may be lucky enough to see a wild Arabian leopard.
If heading outside Salalah, you may also want to visit Sumhuram, once a key part of the ancient Frankincense Trail and the ruins of which are now UNESCO World Heritage list.
The supposed resting place of the prophet Job in the nearby Qara Mountains is also popular, as are the myriad of waterfalls that appear during the rainy season, when the landscapes around Salalah take in a lush green unlike anything else you are likely to see in the country.
