San Francisco is one of the top destinations for anyone taking a trip to the USA and is well visited by the cruise lines that operate trips along the Pacific Coast.
The City by the Bay is packed with things to see and do and the sight of the Golden Gate Bridge appearing from the fog that often envelopes it is one of the most iconic in the cruise industry.
Vibrant, colourful and cosmopolitan, San Francisco is also one of the friendliest cities you can visit on American soil and that is something clear from the moment you step ashore.
Boarding the famous old cable car system that travels around the city is a great way to explore – and will save some energy when it comes to navigating the steep streets for which San Francisco is so well known.
Travelling on the network, which dates back to the 1870s, means you can visit the main areas of the city, from the shopping area around Union Square to the largest Chinatown outside Asia, and from the historical French quarter to the grand mansions around Nob Hill – where you’ll also find the popular Cable Car museum.
Should you decide to you do want to prove your fitness with a walk around the city, then a stroll up Lombard Street – a street so steep that cars are limited to just 5mph – will show what you can do.
Elsewhere in the city, a trip to Fisherman’s Wharf around the waterfront provides the chance to sample some of the locally sourced seafood, to visit the Aquarium of the Bay, explore the local shops or to check out the huge family of sea lions that arrived in the late 1980s and have since made the dock around Pier 39 their home ever since.
Aside from San Francisco itself, you might decide to book a trip out into the bay to visit the island of Alcatraz, which is home to one of the most famous prisons in the world and housed dangerous criminals until the 1960s.
Now on the Register of Historic Places, the prison is amongst a number of buildings on the island that can be explored by the public through a series of guided tours.
Head up onto the Golden Gate Bridge and – if the clouds allow – you’ll be able to look down across the city below, whilst the wine region of Napa Valley is easily accessible from San Francisco if you want to book an exclusion that will allow you to sample some of the regions best wines.
