Santa Marta is located in northern Colombia and is one of the oldest permanent settlements that was created by Europeans who landed in Latin America.
In fact, it was the first Spanish settlement on Colombian soil and dates back to the early 1500s, making it one of the most popular destinations for overseas visitors keen to explore the history of the country.
There is plenty of history too, with Santa Marta being widely regarded as Colombia’s oldest city. Take a stroll through the streets and you can explore the old cathedral that dates back to the 1760s
You might also pay a visit to the museum within the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino - the place where political leader Simón Bolívar died in 1830 – or explore stories from both the past and the present at the Museo del Oro Tairona - Casa de la Aduana, which is found in what was the Customs House during Spanish colonial times.
Santa Marta isn’t all about the past however, with the area around Gaira Bay a short trip away being home to a range of restaurants and bars where you can relax in the sun alongside the beach.
In fact, that beach is one of a number of nearby where you can take in some Caribbean sun, with plenty of areas of white sand along the coast where you can also sample a selection of different watersports.
As well as exploring the various sites of interest around the resort city itself, visitors to Santa Marta can enjoy spending some time exploring the delights of the Parque Nacional Tayrona.
The popular national park features unspoiled beaches, the archaelogical site of Pueblito and is home to a huge array of different species of both plants and animals – making it one of the most important ecological reserves in the country.
