Santo Domingo is the largest city, and the capital, of the Dominican Republic and one that is well visited by cruise lines exploring the waters of the Caribbean.
Whereas other destinations on the island are all about the beaches, Santo Domingo is the place to go if you want to explore the history and heritage of the Dominican Republic, with the city being one of the oldest in the Caribbean.
Dating back to the late 1400s when it was established by the Spanish, Santo Domingo is now a vibrant and colourful city where you can spend your time ashore exploring both some of the oldest and most historical buildings on the island.
Most of these are to be found in the Ciudad Colonial, or Colonial City, which is located in the heart of the city and is widely regarded as the oldest permanent European settlement across the Caribbean.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the areas is home to a number of landmark building that can be explored by strolling through the narrow cobblestone streets.
The famous, gothic-fronted Cathedral of Santa María la Menor, the historic Fortaleza Ozama and the Alcázar de Colón – once the home of Diego Columbus, the son of Christopher – are just three of the many attractions you might want to pay a visit to.
You’ll also find no shortage of restaurants and shops across the area, which can be accessed with ease from the main port – which has undergone huge investment to ensure it can welcome the large, modern day cruise ships.
Head outside the city and you might choose to book an excursion that visits the famous Los Tres Ojos, an open-air limestone cave that features three lakes – or ojos – and which is one of the most popular tourist attractions anywhere in the Dominican Republic.
Fed by an underground river, the lakes are famous for their blue colour and are home to various forms of wildlife.
