The Greek island of Santorini has long been a popular destination for people looking to enjoy the Mediterranean sun, and the unique landscapes are also well visited by the major cruise lines operating in the region.
Santorini is an island that has been shaped by volcanic activity through the ages, and a huge eruption thousands of years ago led to the centre of the island collapsing into the sea – leaving a huge crater around which the island now sits.
When arriving by sea, you’ll be greeted by the spectacular sight of the steep cliffs that were left behind when the heart of the island was lost forever to the ocean below.
Once you have made it to shore via a tender service, you’ll be able to spend time exploring the main sights.
The capital city Firá sits on a cliff edge, which means you’ll have plenty of chance to marvel at some of the most stunning views imaginable – particularly if you head for the city via the cable car from sea level.
You can also stroll amongst the traditional whitewashed buildings that are instantly recognisable around the world, learn more about the fascinating history of the island at two museums within the city or watch the world go by from one of the local bars or cafes.
Elsewhere on the island, you might visit the picturesque village of Oia towards the north or spend time visiting one of the wineries that can be found on the island to sample the local produce.
Should time allow, you might also fancy trying some of the watersports on offer in Kamari, which is home to one of the best black sandy beaches on Santorini.
