Located at the northern end of the Inside Passage, Skagway is one of the go-to destinations on any cruise along the Alaskan coast.
That is in no small part down to the fact that the town had a huge part to play in the Alaskan Gold Rush, having acted as a gateway to the gold rich Klondike region, which was accessed via the Yukon River.
These days, visitors to Skagway can gain an insight into the Gold Rush in the historic district of the town, where there are numerous old buildings that give visitors the chance to see what life would have been like in days gone by.
Part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, you could even try your hand at panning for gold to see how prospectors would have chased their fortune.
Heading out of town, you could book a trip on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad, a narrow gauge railway that heads right into the heart of the Yukon and which would have been used to carry prospectors from Skagway up to the city of Whitehorse.
You’ll pass through dense woodland and have views across stunning waterfalls and lakes as you make the journey – which is something of an experience in itself.
As well as exploring the Gold Rush, you can enjoy a range of outdoor activities during your time in Skagway, which include horse riding and kayaking, whilst you might even fancy joining a dog sled crew for a unique trip through the countryside.
As with the various other cities visited by the major cruise lines, there is the chance to do some shopping in the local stores or to grab something to eat and drink.
When it comes to the latter, you’ll just be able to sit back with a beer in a Gold Rush-era style salon rather than a regular bar.
