Once the capital city of St Lucia, Soufrière sits towards the south west of the island and is the prime destination on the island for those who want to explore the stunning scenery at its very best.
The city itself retains an air of colonial charm dating back to the time when the French and then the British held control, but whilst there are various things to see and do in Soufrière, many will use the port as a gateway to the surrounding areas to embrace some of St Lucia’s most impressive natural sites.
Chief amongst is the Pitons, two giant volcanic plugs that are to be found on the coast to the south of the town.
Standing more than 700m high, Gros Piton and Petit Piton are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are part of a wider geothermal area where you can take a hike along walking trails that wind their way through woodlands and rainforests teeming with flora and fauna.
Close to the Pitons, you could also visit Sulphur Springs – the only ‘Drive in Volcano’ in the world. As the name would suggest, you can drive right up to the edge of the hot springs, with a viewing platform a few hundred yards away from what is now known at Gabriel’s Hole.
Slightly down from the springs, you can even take a mud bath in mud kept warm by the geothermal activities.
Elsewhere, a visit to the Diamond Botanical Gardens means you can wander along one of the various trails that allow you to explore stunning waterfalls and hot mineral springs whilst you could head for a working plantation or take part in all manner of outdoor activities – including horse riding and ziplining.
You could also visit some of the best beaches on St Lucia in the area around Soufrière, whilst the waters off the coast are great for those who enjoy diving, with reefs and wrecks waiting to be explored.
