The islands of the Caribbean are famed for stunning stretches of coastline, but Antigua really raises the bar – with mile upon mile of golden sand being one of the major draws for overseas visitors.
Cruise ships heading for the island dock in the area around the capital St John’s, which can be accessed on foot once you head ashore.
Despite dating back to colonial times, St John’s is home to plenty of shopping malls and boutiques where you can look for designer gear as well as more traditional, independent stores where locals sell their handmade goods.
There are also plenty of places to grab a bite to eat or something to drink, with St John’s being home to the Antigua Distillery – the only rum distillery on the island.
Although tours no longer operate, there are plenty of places in which you can sample the goods in the surrounding area.
City landmarks include the Museum of Antigua & Barbuda, the Botanical Gardens and St John’s Cathedral, which originally dates back as far as the 1640s. The current building however was only built in 1845, with two previous incarnations of the cathedral having been destroyed by earthquakes.
Head south across the island from St John’s and there is the opportunity to explore Nelson’s Dockyard, which is located in Saint Paul Parish to the south of the island.
The former British naval yard is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site alongside Shirley Heights, a lookout point above English Harbour, which has been extensively restored and provides some of the best views anywhere on the island.
Head into the Antiguan rainforests and you can not only marvel at the stunning landscapes but also partake in thrilling zipline trips through the trees.
With well over 300 beaches surrounding the island, there are plenty of opportunities to lie back and relax under the sun, whilst the inviting waters are perfect for snorkeling and diving.
Stingray City is a particular highlight, with the chance to take a speedboat ride out to a shallow pool surrounded by a coral reef where you can head into the water and swim alongside these majestic creatures.
