The largest island in the Windward group of French Polynesia, Tahiti is a popular destination for overseas visitors looking for a fun filled Pacific adventure – including those who are sailing around the region on a cruise.
The economic centre of French Polynesia, Tahiti is also home to the capital Papeete – which is where you can expect to find yourself should your cruise be heading for Tahitian soil.
The capital is a bustling and modern destination that also retains plenty of historic charm – meaning you’ll be able to see first hand why the island was popular with the likes of Paul Gaugin and Henri Matisse and why is has often been called the ‘Island of Love’.
Head for Papeete and you’ll be able to explore a handful of historical sites like the Notre Dame Cathedral, which dates back to the 1870s, before hitting the local shops and markets or sampling some local food.
Tahitian cuisine from one of the food trucks that park up around the main square in the waterfront park area is well worth checking out if you want an alternative to the traditional restaurants.
But not everyone will want to stay within the city, and you can head out to explore some of the scenic sights with a road trip around the island.
You can embrace views across the coast from One Tree Hill, the place where Captain Cook used a lone tree as a landmark, or to Point Venus , where Cook’s expedition onboard the Endeavour observed the transit of Venus.
There is also the possibility of heading inland to explore the stunning landscapes around the Papenoo Valley whilst the Faarumai waterfalls are some of the most picturesque on the island.
