Tonga is made up of a collection of islands that are spread across the waters of the South Pacific and are popular with people who want to enjoy some sun, sand and relaxation during their time ashore.
Known as the 'Friendly Islands' thanks to the reception enjoyed by Captain Cook when he landed during his second round the world voyage in the 1770s, Tonga is a nation packed with historical sites as well as dramatic landscapes and natural beauty at every turn.
You can expect to find impressive white sandy beaches where you can lie back and enjoy the sun, with warm turquoise waters lapping against the shore.
The surrounding coral reefs packed with marine life ensure that snorkelling and diving are both popular activities - providing the chance to see a varied range of species that include rays, turtles and a huge array of smaller tropical fish.
Take a trip out around the coast on a boat and you might even manage to spot whales or sharks swimming in groups.
Whilst there are hundreds of islands within Tonga, the most visited is Tongatapu, which is home to the capital city Nuku'alofa.
Within the city, you can take a stroll past the impressive Royal Palace, which is the official residence of the King of Tonga and dates back to 1867, or visit the historic Free Church of Tonga. The National Museum is also a good place to consider visiting if you want to know more about island culture and history.
Elsewhere on the island, the stone Ha'amonga 'a Maui Trilithon stone arch dates back to the 13th century and was built as the gateway to what was then the royal compound.
The remains of the old palace complex and the royal tombs of former Tongan rulers are also worth visiting, as are impressive blowholes where you can marvel at huge jets of water being sprayed into the air.
Whilst on Tongan soil, you’ll want to check out some of the local cuisine that is created using traditional old methods, whilst visit one of the various markets and you can pick up some handmade goods to serve as a reminder of your Pacific adventures.
