Valparaiso is one of the main cruise ports in Chile, down in no small part to the fact that is one of the main gateways to the busy capital city of Santiago.
However, there are plenty of reasons why you might want to spend some time exploring the coastal city itself rather than simply passing through to visit elsewhere.
The historical importance of Valparaiso is reflected in the fact that the old quarter of the city has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Within the city, you can visit the oldest stock exchange in Latin America as well as the first public library in Chile whilst there are various National Monuments – including the Iglesia de La Matriz del Salvador in the heart of the port district.
Travelling around the city and taking in the sights is also something of an experience in itself, with the unique funicular railway system being the ideal way in which to get up and down the steep city streets.
Near to Valparaiso is the vibrant beach resort of Viña del Mar, where you can spend some time relaxing by the water or exploring more historical sites that include Brunet Castle and the Palacio Rioja.
Across both Viña del Mar and Valpairoso there are countless opportunities to enjoy some fine dining or to sit back with a glass of wine whilst there are two large shopping centres in the latter where you can seek out a deal on souvenirs.
