Once little more than a small port focused around fishing, Portland has developed into the largest city in the state of Maine and has a key role to play in the local tourist industry.

That is down in no small part to the large port, which isn’t only used for exporting goods but is also well visited by cruise ships sailing along the coast.

Like many coastal cities, Portland has a rich history that can be explored at every turn, with a number of Victorian-era buildings that go back to the time when British settlers founded the city.

Amongst the historical sites that are worth checking out are the Wadsworth Longfellow House, which was the childhood home of the famous poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow before being turned into a museum, the Custom House and the Victoria Mansion – all of which hark back to a bygone era.

Within the city there are a number of museums and galleries - including the Portland Museum of Art, the Maine Historical Museum and the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Main – whilst the Portland Observatory is also worth a visit as the only surviving maritime signal tower in the USA.
