Elsewhere in the city, a trip to Fisherman’s Wharf around the waterfront provides the chance to sample some of the locally sourced seafood, to visit the Aquarium of the Bay, explore the local shops or to check out the huge family of sea lions that arrived in the late 1980s and have since made the dock around Pier 39 their home ever since.

Aside from San Francisco itself, you might decide to book a trip out into the bay to visit the island of Alcatraz, which is home to one of the most famous prisons in the world and housed dangerous criminals until the 1960s.

Now on the Register of Historic Places, the prison is amongst a number of buildings on the island that can be explored by the public through a series of guided tours.

Head up onto the Golden Gate Bridge and – if the clouds allow – you’ll be able to look down across the city below, whilst the wine region of Napa Valley is easily accessible from San Francisco if you want to book an exclusion that will allow you to sample some of the regions best wines.
